Two Simple Principles for Smart Adulting
If you ever find yourself in a new locale, enjoying friends, family, and freedom from the rigor of the daily grind, and I sincerely hope you do, explore with spirit and fun! Soak it up, and in, on your vacation or long weekend. Make new core memories that will last a lifetime!
As a seasoned road warrior who has traveled to countries around the world, I offer two simple principles to adhere to that will ensure you’ve built a great foundation to enjoy your well deserved respite.
On vacation, the only have-to-dos are the wanna-dos—well, within reason.
Among the must-dos in any getaway that doesn’t involve police and bail would be clothes. Clothes are required – always. Your attire is your choice. As long as you’ve got the essentials covered, then you’re covered. Check? Check.
Also, it’s typically a smart idea to be aware of your surroundings, both for your own safety and the safety and welfare of those around you. Check? Check.
I know this might be a lot to digest (it was for me as well), so I will quickly recap. Two simple principles to remember:
- Clothes are not optional.
- Remain situationally aware of your surroundings.
I offer this PSA under the terms of an agreement with parties that shall remain confidential, because unfortunately, I violated both principles of smart adulting when I walked out of the shower to grab some aforementioned attire while on a trip and hear my sweet wife yell, and I quote:

While I am the poster child for adult ADHD hyperfocus, in my defense, the cruise ship wasn’t docked outside our patio when I went to shower.
However, that said, I’ve since learned I was shortsighted to not have prepared for any and every kind of possible combination of scenarios before, during, and after showering. It is my responsibility and I was wrong.
First, I want to thank Mrs. Sojourner for clarifying this tiny shade of gray in life for me as well as vigorously illuminating the error of my ways. She is a beautiful and highly intelligent woman and I am a better man because of her.
Also, I extend my sincerest apologies to the crew and cruisers aboard the ship. Some things you can’t unsee.
That’s enough for tonight. Tomorrow’s another light.
From one sojourner to another, all the best!
